Trellis Me.

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

We went from this- vines climbing into the other bed, cutting off sun from my onions and strangling other plants.  The tomatoes had reached over the cages- no surprise there- and swayed over to the other bed.  No room for walking in this aisle of the garden.
To this- trellised up, all unhealthy vines and leaves snipped, walking room aplenty. So much better.
Eric built the trellis out of cedar left over from our porch dining table project. I took these photos right after putting the trellis up and pushing the vines around, so they look a bit sad here.  Today after they've had a night to recuperate they are already looking perked back up and are throwing out feelers everywhere.
I've mentioned before that I'm using the 'vegetable factory' growing system this year, so thats why there are so many plants in each bed.  To be honest I did get a bit worried that they were over-planted, but now they are doing so well that I'm grateful to have tried something different this year.  This system is all about growing upwards, taking advantage of vertical space, so without major trellising previously its no wonder I was getting worried.
