Even though it is November I wanted to wrap up the 'garden progress' posts. Looking back I think the garden was way more successful than I realized or thought at the time. For two medium sized raised beds we had a ton of produce. Here is the final harvest when I was clearing out the beds a month or so ago.
3 cucumbers, 1 tomato, 3 carmen peppers, 1 banana pepper- the only banana pepper that plant produced
Green tomatoes that ended up ripening up on the window sill (Don't ever try to juice green tomatoes- it will make you barf- an embarrassing story I'll keep to myself.) Basil, basil, and more basil. I dried this in the dehydrator and have been using it in sauces and soups. More basil has been sprouting out in the beds now.
I saw a YouTube (from Praxxus, I think?) about harvesting your cabbage head and not pulling up the roots. Using this method you can grow extra heads from the single set of roots. After a couple weeks of looking very dead, 4 new heads started to sprout. Since they are cold weather loving I am just leaving them in to continue growing.
In September on our annual flea market trip there was a local landscape company selling different types of apple trees. Since my end goal is to be able to support us, at least a little bit, with fruits and veggies from our own yard I bought these two trees. Two apple trees help cross pollinate each other and thus produce better. We got a granny smith (one of Eric's fav, plus good for baking) and a 'pixie', reportedly a 'explosively crisp, juicy, mouthwatering apple flavor'. Can't wait to plant these and some day (2-3 years) have our own apples!Looking forward to expanding the garden and trying different things next year.
